Analog or digital ... or both at the same time

Many model-railroad hobbyists (once) started with an analog layout. As long as the size of the layout is limited and just a few trains run at the same time this can be done quite easily. But when the virus grows, often there is a wish to run many trains simultaneous, secure the traffic and perhaps automate operations in whole or partially. The usual idea is that this is only possible when a digital system is applied and trains are equipped with decoders.

The choice can be difficult. One can think of many reasons not to put a decoder in (every) locomotive. On the other hand, you want better control over your layout and suppose you see your favorate loco in the display of your shop, the loco you always wanted, with bells and whistles, so with decoder .. Now what?
